Ubiquisys and picoChip announce Femtocell developments

November 20, 2017

Two UK companies have announced developments in Femtocells – small cellular base stations that can help extend network coverage.

Swindon-base Ubiquisys has announced commercial availability of its wide area femtocell solution, providing a coverage area of up to 5 sq.miles.

The cost-effective solution can significantly boost coverage in rural areas, which is of particular interest at the moment, given the government’s plans for universal broadband access.

The Wide Area Femtocells can be mounted either outside or indoors and have a capacity of up to 16 calls.

Chris Gilbert, CEO Ubiquisys, sai: “This is no reference design – it’s a robust commercial solution.

“Our femtocells automatically adapt to their environment, eliminating the need for radio planning and enabling fast deployment of coverage and capacity precisely where it’s needed.

Our wide area solution provides yet more evidence that femtocells are more than a new technology, they are changing the economics of mobile”.

Meanwhile, Bath-based picoChip has announced its femtocell solutions roadmap, which will enhance mobile coverage within buildings.

picoChip has integrated PHY, stack and femtocell system software from US-based Continuous Computing, in an end-to-end femtocell reference solution.
